Experience everyday life: ‘Give & Take excursion’ to the ǂNabasib primary school in the southern centre of Namibia

Many Namibia holidaymakers don’t just want to experience landscapes or animals in the wild and travel from lodge to lodge. They also want to get to know the people of Namibia and gain an insight into their everyday lives.

Some would also like their holiday to make a meaningful contribution to improving people’s living conditions. The ‘Give & Take Excursion’ to the ǂNabasib Government School is just the thing for fans of this ‘responsible travelling’.

The school is located about 15 km from BüllsPort Lodge & Farm on the C14. You drive there in your own car and are welcomed by a teacher who shows you around the school and explains the daily school routine. In the classrooms you will get a good impression of the lessons and the teaching materials.

At the end of the visit, you will experience a cultural performance. Pupils present traditional Ovambo, Baster and Nama songs and dances, which they have rehearsed under the direction of dedicated teachers. These performances also motivate the children to cultivate the culture of their respective ethnic groups – together and across cultural groups.

Donation as payment for the tour

You decide the ‘price’ for the two-hour ‘tour’ with a cultural performance at the end – in the form of a donation. Many are guided by the price of an activity that corresponds to the two-hour tour, and add a bonus depending on the level of satisfaction. A current recommendation from BüllsPort Lodge & Farm can be found on the price list for experiences.

The money is given to the leading teacher, preferably in an envelope. The school also raises money by itself, through sports festivals and other activities, to buy school supplies such as pens and exercise books or sports equipment. Although education is always the largest item in the annual state budget, the funds for government schools are only sufficient for the bare essentials.

Please note: The tour is not possible at weekends or during school holidays. It only takes place in the afternoons so as not to disrupt lessons. BüllsPort Lodge & Farm must give advance notice of an excursion so that teachers and students can prepare. It is best to indicate that you are interested in the ‘Give & Take’ excursion to ǂNabasib Primary School when booking your stay.

Responsible travelling: Contributing to sustainable development

By the way: If you would like to do even more for the ǂNabasib Primary School, you can make a larger donation to the Naukluft Foundation. The foundation was established in 2005 by BüllsPort Lodge & Farm and the Ababis guest farm. Its funds are used to finance larger projects for the school.

Some guests see this as part of ‘responsible travel’: a meaningful contribution, made directly on site, to support the people in the holiday destination.

Incidentally, travelling itself is also responsible, even to faraway countries such as Namibia. Despite all the concerns about climate-damaging flights, we must not forget that tourism is the only economic sector in many developing countries that can grow sustainably.

In Namibia, an average of twelve holidaymakers create one job. Many accommodations, like BüllsPort Lodge & Farm, are located close to attractive natural sites in rural areas. With their jobs, they therefore also counteract the problem of rural exodus. And many accommodations support social projects in their neighbourhood. Like BüllsPort Lodge & Farm supports the primary school ǂNabasib.
