But it did have an invigorating effect. Perennial grasses are sending up fresh shoots from below, adding lush green strands to the golden-yellow tufts. Along the edges of the riviere (dry rivers) channels, where the water flowed more slowly, fresh, tall grass is sprouting.<\/p>\n
And in small vleis (depressions) on the plains, the stagnant rainwater has awakened the lilies. Dozens, even hundreds of bulbs in the soil are now sprouting, transforming the vleis into patches of blossom.<\/p>\n
Many shrubs have already flowered and developed robust leaves. Most of the trees are green. The moringa, which stores water in its thick, at times bulbous trunk, is sprouting and pushing out leaves.<\/p>\n
Although other areas of Namibia have also experienced significant rainfall, waterbirds are present. Egyptian geese are swimming on the farm dam near Bull’s Head. Photo: Nina Cerezo<\/p><\/div>\n The situation is different for wildlife. The mountain zebras are currently on the plateau of the Naukluft Mountains in the adjacent national park. There is more grazing available there because it has rained more frequently and heavily. The Hartmann’s mountain zebra (Equus zebra hartmannae)<\/a> is found almost exclusively in Namibia.<\/p>\n Nevertheless, game such as kudu, klipspringer and steenbok are almost always seen. A herd of about 150 springbok grazes in the area. In total, around 50 mammal species are native to the NAUkLuFT region.<\/p>\n According to weather experts, Namibia can expect an above-average rainy season. This also applies to the south, where average rainfall is lower than in the north (see report in the Namibian Sun<\/a>; accessible free of charge from 12:00 Namibian time).<\/p>\n The long-term average rainfall for B\u00fcllsPort is 120 mm per year. The majority of the rain typically falls between January and March. B\u00fcllsPort has already received 46.5 mm of rain. Therefore, there’s a good chance that the weather experts’ forecast will be accurate also for the NAUkLuFT.<\/p>\n Many Namibians, however, dismiss these long-term prognoses. Regen empfinden sie dabei eher als st\u00f6rend. Auf B\u00fcllsPort Lodge & Farm dagegen freuten sich alle \u00fcber einen kr\u00e4ftigen Silvester-Regen. Der das neue Jahr mit einem kleinen, stillen Bl\u00fcten-Feuerwerk begr\u00fc\u00dfte...<\/p> Bereits Mitte November hat sich B\u00fcllsPort \u00fcber vier kleine Regenf\u00e4lle freuen d\u00fcrfen. Innerhalb von f\u00fcnf Tagen fielen 5 + 7 + 5,5 + 9 = 26,5 mm. Ideal f\u00fcr Grassamen zum Keimen und Sprie\u00dfen. \u00dcberall breitete sich ein Hauch frischen Gr\u00fcns aus.<\/p> Damit war es im Dezember allerdings wieder schnell vorbei. Kein weiterer Tropfen, daf\u00fcr eine gnadenlos scheinende Sonne. Bis es v\u00f6llig \u00fcberraschend am allerletzten Abend des Monats und Jahres richtig kr\u00e4ftig regnete: 20 mm.<\/p> Dieser Silvester-Regen verwandelt die Natur zwar nicht in ein bl\u00fchendes Paradies. Mehrere kleine Regenf\u00e4lle, die im Abstand weniger Tage aufeinander folgen, haben eine nachhaltigere Wirkung als ein Wolkenbruch mit derselben Gesamtmenge an Regen.<\/p> Aber er hat eine belebende Wirkung. Mehrj\u00e4hrige Gr\u00e4ser treiben von unten frische Halme durch und bilden goldgelbe B\u00fcschel mit saftig gr\u00fcnen Str\u00e4hnchen. An R\u00e4ndern von Schloten der Riviere (Trockenfl\u00fcsse), in denen das Wasser langsamer abfloss, sprie\u00dft frisches, hohes Gras.<\/p> Und in kleinen Vleis (Senken) in den Ebenen hat das stehende Regenwasser die Lilien aufgeweckt. Dutzende, Hunderte Zwiebeln im Boden treiben nun aus und verwandeln die Vleis in kleine Bl\u00fcten-Fl\u00e4chen.<\/p> Viele Str\u00e4ucher haben schon gebl\u00fcht und kr\u00e4ftige Bl\u00e4tter angesetzt. Der gr\u00f6\u00dfte Teil der B\u00e4ume ist gr\u00fcn. Der Moringa, der Wasser in seinem dicken bis bauchigen Stamm speichert, treibt aus und schiebt Bl\u00e4tter.<\/p> Obwohl es in anderen Gebieten Namibias ebenfalls und viel mehr geregnet hat, finden sich Wasserv\u00f6gel ein. Auf dem Farmdamm (Stausee) nahe dem Bullenkopf schwimmen Nilg\u00e4nse. Sogar ein Wei\u00dfstorch (Ciconia ciconia<\/em>)<\/a> macht dort zurzeit Station.<\/p>[caption id=\"attachment_9716\" align=\"alignnone\" width=\"800\"] Beim Wild sieht die Lage anders aus. Die Bergzebras halten sich gerade auf dem Plateau der Naukluft-Berge im angrenzenden Nationalpark auf. Dort gibt es mehr Weide, weil es dort \u00f6fter und mehr geregnet hat. Das Hartmann-Bergzebra (Equus zebra hartmannae<\/em>)<\/a> kommt fast nur in Namibia vor.<\/p> Dennoch sieht man fast immer Wild wie Kudu, Klippspringer und Steinb\u00f6ckchen.
